Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox is the second performance in the ‘gold woman never said this would be easy series’. This performance by Aoife Desmond and Macha Shewolf marks a significant clearance at Kyrl’s Quay island through voice and movement work. They perform with a horse in recognition of the site’s former history as a timber yard with work horses used for transport.

These performances respond to the 'island' site at Kyrl’s Quay. Using gold leaf on the face and eyelids to create a temporary performative alter ego; 'gold woman'. The performances draw on a shared contemporary discomfort in responding to ecological and social crisis. The significance of performing these works at key points within the solar and earth calendar such as Spring Equinox (March 21st) is pivotal to harness moments of renewal, increased light, growth and potential. Spring Equinox marks the midpoint of Spring, a time when day and night are equal. It is a time associated with seeds, planting and the moving of animals to grazing pastures.

This performance by Aoife Desmond, Macha Shewolf and Floss (the horse) is captured on 16mm by cinematographer Narayan Van Maale with sound recording by Fiona Sheils and digital documentation by Cáit Ní Dhúinnín.

Biodiversity – Live Music Performance

Biodiversity Music Programme featuring: Who’s Woods These Are (Natalia Beylis + Eimear Reidy) / Willie Stewart / Roslyn Steer

The biodiversity seminar at TEST SITE is paired with an evening of three live performances all relating to or developed from a connection to and awareness of nature - each performance, a response to ecology and the natural environment. Natalia Beylis, Eimear Reidy, Roslyn Steer and Willie Stewart will perform live on Kyrl’s Quay. ‘Whose Woods These Are' is an arboreal music & research project by Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy. The title of the project 'Whose Woods These Are' is taken from Robert Frost’s 'Stopping by Woods.' The poem entered public domain on midnight Jan 1 and now it is owned by no one/owned by us all collectively. 'The woods are lovely, dark and deep.' Who owns the trees? Who owns the woods? Is it the birds who build homes within the branches? Or the worms who create the nutrients among their roots? Or all creatures whose very lives rely on their oxygen? Imagine a public domain of trees where no one owned them & together we were their guardians. It is our hope that by bringing an audience to the trees, we will encourage people to relish time spent in nature and look after the woodlands. The project was supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Music Project Award. Roslyn Steer, a member of Morning Veils, who specialises in “forgotten folk” will present an ambient vocal driven set in response to repeated walks in her rural neighbourhood. Soundmaker and DJ Willie Stewart, will present an eclectic set responding to ecology in the urban environment. This is a seated, outdoor, socially-distanced event, with limited capacity. Maximum 6 tickets per purchase/per seating pod. If you wish to sit in a pod please book under the same name. This event is open to people of all ages provided children are accompanied by an adult. This is an alcohol and drug free event. If you have specific access requirements and would like to attend this event, please get in touch before the event. Please note that photographs and film footage will be taken during the event, please advise if you do not wish to be included in any photography. Biodiversity – Seminar

What is the pathway to realising a future where biodiversity and development truly coexist in our city?

Chaired by Brendan Smith (Galway National Park City), we will tease out the topic of how and why ecological issues are overlooked or not equally considered when it comes to urban development. We ask, can this change and how? This discussion will be grounded in the ecologically diverse site on Kyrl’s Quay while relating to the global climate crisis from an intersectional perspective. The panelists are Kaethe Burt O'Dea (BíUrban, Dublin) and Shane Clarke (Nano Nagle Place, Cork) with more to be announced.

This is a seated, outdoor, socially-distanced event, with limited capacity. Maximum 6 tickets per purchase/per seating pod. If you wish to sit in a pod please book under the same name.
